The event at Laon occurred at noon. One minute before the Sun reached its highest local position, birds stopped moving along the ridge. Regional Stratoforms began adjusting their altitude. No closure or warning appeared on the public network.
Then every shadow turned north. The Sun remained in the southern sky. Gravity did not change. Weighted cords continued to point normally toward the ground. Yet their shadows extended toward the northern parapet. A pale vertical line appeared above the city.
Franck moved several metres west. The line followed his apparent vertical.
Alix crossed to the opposite side of the platform. From her position, the line remained inclined by the same six degrees.
It was not standing in one location. Each observer was seeing a local representation of the same displaced axis.
Franck disabled the automatic correction in his instruments. The displayed horizon tilted. Laon did not. The sky did.
“North has become up,” Alix said.
“Not for gravity,” Franck replied. “For alignment.”
The axis extended beyond the atmosphere. Its upper projection passed near the trailing region of the Earth–Moon system, close to the last known trajectory of an experimental mission lost more than two centuries earlier. Its lower projection entered the Earth beneath Antarctica.
Above and below. Two directions that ordinary geography treated as opposites had become the two ends of one relation. A dark form appeared beside the luminous line, visible above the cathedral from the northern plain and as a vertical spindle from the south. It did not wait for the Midnight Meridian. It had appeared six hours too early.
Franck understood why. The phenomenon was no longer waiting for midnight. It was waiting for him. Humanity had spent centuries imagining visitors arriving from distant stars.
The emerging truth was more disturbing. The visitors might not come from elsewhere. They might come from human routes the Earth had stopped sharing.
