The object did not arrive above Mide Valley. One moment, the sky was empty. The next, a broad flattened form occupied the air above the old spring. No route history preceded it. No wake followed it. The local system nevertheless identified it almost immediately.
PRIVATE TRANSPORT — RHINE CIVIC SERIES. The registry was valid. The corresponding vehicle was docked near Basel.
Seconds later, the classification changed. MEDICAL-SUPPORT STRATOFORM

Each machine existed. Each possessed a complete maintenance record. None was above Mide Valley. The object itself appeared to change with the classifications. Its lateral surfaces widened. Its field ring moved. A forward section emerged where no structure had been visible before.
Mick watched from the refuge. “Is it transforming?”
Franck studied the raw optical layer. “No. The network is.”
The sensors had detected an unfamiliar presence. Unable to leave it unresolved, the system searched its archives for the nearest acceptable explanation. Each new category reconstructed the form differently. The object was partly observed and partly inferred. Then a human figure appeared behind its forward surface. Pale skin. Eyes adapted to weak light. One hand pressed against the transparent boundary. Four fingers moved normally. The fifth remained rigid, connected to a structure running along the wrist.
Kiro stood beside Franck. The dog showed no fear. But he was not looking directly at the craft. He faced a point higher above the northern horizon—toward a relation no compensated instrument displayed.
