The Hessdalen station had been built to observe what moved. That was its first limitation. For more than three centuries, unexplained lights had appeared above the Norwegian valley. Their names changed with each technological age: plasma, atmospheric discharge, military activity, optical error, unknown aircraft. The lights remained.

On November 17, 2312, Dr Liv Nygård found a new pattern in the station records. Every night, the instruments had registered a brief flattening of temperature, magnetic variation and electrical noise. The events occurred at different clock times. But always at the same local solar time.

Midnight. Not legal midnight. Not 00:00. The instant when the Sun reached its lowest position beneath the local horizon. Liv programmed the station to observe passively. No radar pulse. No lidar. No automatic tracking.

At 23:20:43, a pale light appeared above the river. It was visible. Yet it illuminated nothing. The mist did not brighten. The water reflected no glow. Beneath the light, droplets began to rise from the river toward a broad invisible surface.

Then every clock in the station returned to 23:20:43. The instruments continued recording. Liv continued moving and speaking. A manual recorder captured four minutes and nine seconds of sound. But sequence no longer accumulated. When the phenomenon vanished, the clocks resumed. The recording showed the same creation and completion time: 23:20:43.

Liv opened the planetary model. Solar midnight was not a point fixed above Hessdalen. It was a geometrical relation moving westward around Earth as the planet rotated. The light had not arrived in the valley. The valley had entered its line. And somewhere farther west, the next place was approaching midnight.
