Franck Mide had not restored the world. He had prevented it from becoming complete. The phase machines had begun by removing delay from production. They ended by deciding which objects, places and people could remain within a shared present. Franck stopped their expansion by introducing limitation. From then on, a local discrepancy could remain local. A route could hesitate. Two measurements could disagree without one being immediately erased. The world became less efficient, but it continued.

Paris remained an archipelago. Some buildings could still be reached only by those aligned with them. Some roads crossed landscapes without connecting the surfaces on either side. Morland, Champlieu and Mide Valley became reference points—not because they were perfectly stable, but because they could retain several incomplete relations at once.

Daily life adapted. The Stratoforms made that adaptation possible. They flew above ground that no longer always held in the same way. They did not follow roads. They moved from one temporary condition of compatibility to the next, correcting their routes before each relation failed.

At first, every correction remained local. Then the vehicles began sharing them. A successful adjustment made by one Stratoform became evidence for another. Across thousands of journeys, small decisions accumulated. The network learned which interpretation of the world allowed movement to continue. The machines did not merely navigate through reality. They began to agree on what counted as navigable.

Six months after Champlieu, Franck noticed that unrelated Stratoforms were making the same almost invisible correction. Westward. The deviation was too small to affect a journey. No passenger would have felt it. No ordinary operational report mentioned it. But the corrections followed local solar time. They moved around the planet with the night.

At Hessdalen, Norway, a pale light appeared above a river at the precise instant of solar midnight. It illuminated nothing. Every clock stopped advancing. And for four minutes, the valley remained inside a present that accumulated no sequence.

The phase machines had destabilized the world below. Now something was moving through the sky.
