The evacuation Stratoform had crossed the Upper Drava corridor fourteen times that morning. On the fifteenth journey, a mare refused the route. Nara did not panic. She did not struggle against her transport frame. She simply turned toward the western wall and remained there. Seventeen seconds later, the Stratoform detected an alternative direction.
The official corridor remained safe. Weather conditions were stable. No obstacle appeared ahead. The machine nevertheless slowed. The supervisor selected the declared route manually. Nara struck the frame once. Every animal in the compartment raised its head.
The Stratoform turned west. The alternative line led to no registered destination. Yet a physical platform gradually appeared among the trees below: cracked, covered in moss and absent from every current transport map.
The vehicle landed. Outside, Nara found a concealed path. She followed it toward an old spring, then stopped where historical plans placed the centre of a vanished animal enclosure.

She had never visited the site. An ancestor had. More than a century earlier, animals from her lineage had passed through the abandoned transfer station before continuing toward western refuges.
Nara could not have inherited a conscious map of the spring, the gate and the enclosure. But a lineage might preserve something less precise and more durable: sensory thresholds, magnetic weighting, responses to terrain, water, pressure, smell and direction.
For one morning, those weak traces agreed again. The mare did not remember the station as a person remembers a place. Her body recognized a relation in which several inherited signals once more pointed together.
The Stratoform detected the same relation later. The sequence mattered. First, the animal turned. Then the machine learned where to look.
