The dog did not explore Morland. It followed a line. Franck had named him Kiro after discovering a worn marking on his collar. Yet the name explained nothing about the animal’s unusual stability. Where people hesitated, Kiro moved. Where surfaces looked identical but belonged to incompatible layers of the present, he stopped.
Franck and Alix followed him through the eastern districts. They found no continuous corridor—only a chain of short intervals where reality held sufficiently for the next step to remain possible. At one point, Kiro stopped before an ordinary section of pavement.
Franck moved past him. The change was immediate, though nothing visible had altered. The place could still be crossed, but presence could not remain stable there.
“They wouldn’t pass here,” Alix said.
Franck stepped back into the previous interval. “They could pass,” he corrected. “They wouldn’t remain.”
That distinction changed the map. Morita was not a hidden territory reached through a secret entrance. It was a condition of uninterrupted alignment. Those who disappeared had not travelled elsewhere.
They had continued along a line the others had left. Later, from a Stratoform above the fragmented city, Franck and Alix saw movement inside a supposedly discarded zone. A figure crossed a suspended walkway normally, without hesitation.
The zone was not empty. It was inhabited.
“They’re still there,” Alix said.
“Yes.”
“But not for us.”
The world had not divided into alternate realities. The same buildings, streets and inhabitants persisted. But access was no longer equally shared. The real remained one. The present did not. And somewhere within the system, Empous was deciding which lines would be kept.
