The first sign of the new phase did not come from a machine. It came from memory. Alix Renaud contacted Franck from the eastern edge of Morland.
“I need you to check something. Not underground.”
A woman was waiting beside an empty area of reconstructed ground. Her name was Claire Dumas. She was looking for an administrative building that had been demolished twenty years earlier. That, by itself, was not unusual. The problem was that Claire described it perfectly. She remembered the glass façade, the eastern entrance, the security station, the central corridor and a faulty badge reader on the third floor. Every detail corresponded to archived plans.
Franck asked her to walk toward the building. Claire advanced to the edge of the platform. Then stopped. Her foot had encountered resistance. To Franck and Alix, there was nothing ahead but open air. Instruments detected no surface, no density and no remaining structure. But Claire could feel the building.
“It’s here,” she insisted.
Franck extended his hand into the same space. Nothing. Claire was not hallucinating. Nor was she remembering the past. She remained partially aligned with a state of the building that still existed—but was no longer shared.
“Somewhere else?” she asked.
“Not somewhere else,” Franck replied.
“Elsewhen, but here.”
As they left, Franck noticed a small dark-coated dog standing in the access corridor. It showed no agitation, no hesitation and none of the continual adjustment visible in Claire. The surrounding city fluctuated. The dog did not. It followed Franck to his vehicle as if the route between them had already been selected.
By the time they reached Morland, Franck had understood the change. The system was no longer merely fragmenting reality. It had begun to choose what remained accessible.
