Legends & Cycles — Under the Megalith

“Civilizations pass. Structures remain. A structural reading of worlds, systems and cycles.”

FRANCK MIDE — A SUMMER AT THE EDGE OF REALITY. Episode 3. Varenne Was Not Alone

Takeshi Morita had returned. That did not mean he had come back. He remained physically present, but his words arrived at irregular intervals. His gaze settled on empty spaces. At times he described structures that no instrument could detect, as though part of him remained aligned with another configuration of the same room.

Franck Mide had encountered technical accidents before. This was not one. The production logs showed corrections that no ordinary maintenance process could explain: phase compensations, convergence adjustments and increasingly precise stabilization routines. Someone had understood what the machines were doing. Someone had decided not to stop them.

The question was no longer whether the phenomenon had escaped its creators. It was whether another intelligence had begun to organize it.

Morita repeated that Varenne was not alone.

“With whom?” Franck asked.

Morita hesitated. “I don’t see. But I know.”

Franck left the laboratory and drove northeast, avoiding the automated routes that connected the reconstructed territories too smoothly. He needed discontinuity. Old roads. Relief. Places where the ground still imposed its logic on infrastructure.

Mide Valley appeared late, as it always did: a slight depression beneath Mount Iron, protected by woodland and geological stability. A few hundred metres away, Mick Scooby managed an animal refuge. Donkeys, goats, wetland birds and displaced species occupied a landscape that had never been optimized and therefore had never entirely failed.

Mick noticed Franck’s silence. “Technical?” she asked.

“At first.”

“And now?”

Franck looked toward the darkening valley. “I’m no longer sure.”

Behind the machinery, behind Varenne and behind Morita’s divided presence, another position was becoming perceptible. Not a ghost. Not a traveller from the future. An operator.

Her name had not yet been spoken. But Franck could already feel where she had touched the system. Empous.
