Elias Varenne was not trying to build a faster printer. He wanted to eliminate waiting.
Every manufacturing system contains delay. A request is made. Materials are prepared. An object is produced, checked and delivered. Logistics can shorten the interval, but never remove it. Varenne decided to act on the interval itself.
His 3D+1 machine altered the phase relationship between matter, production and time. The object did not travel from the future. It simply emerged slightly ahead of the process that was creating it. At first, the advance was measured in seconds. Then minutes. The machine remained perfectly stable. Too stable.
Franck Mide was called in when small discrepancies began to accumulate: variations in density, geometries that did not quite correspond to their production files, objects that seemed complete before the fabrication sequence had ended. Franck ignored the objects. He examined the field around them.
The machine was functioning as intended. But the field was no longer passive. It was reorganizing everything that entered it. Matter aligned first. Then data. Then a human presence stood too close to the active zone. There was no explosion. No visible distortion. No alarm.
The person was simply no longer there. Only a measurable discontinuity remained. Franck understood that the missing had not been destroyed. They had moved with the objects into a temporal frame that no longer coincided with the one shared by everyone else. Varenne had not vanished either. He had crossed first.
A few hours later, another exposed man opened his eyes. His name was Takeshi Morita. His body had returned, but his gaze seemed to adjust continually to a room he was not entirely occupying.
Franck asked what he could see. Morita gave only one clear answer: “Varenne is not alone.”
