Some cities vanish. Others remain long after they have ceased to function as cities.

By the 24th century, Paris belongs to the second category. The bombings did not erase it. The waters did not swallow it all at once. Its historical centre sank slowly, while the higher districts remained above the new estuary. La Défense, Trocadéro, Montmartre and Saint-Denis became separated cities, connected by routes that existed without always forming a coherent network. Paris became an archipelago. Between these elevated fragments lies Morland: neither an old centre nor a newly planned capital, but a stable plateau built above what did not hold.

Morland — a city built above what did not hold.

That is where Franck Mide lives. His office occupies the third floor of an unremarkable building. A Japanese restaurant operates below. A museum preserves dolls from a material world that has almost disappeared. Above his office, Franck inhabits a single room overlooking the water. Officially, he advises companies on advanced innovation.

Unofficially, he intervenes when technologies stop behaving like tools and begin behaving like environments. He does not investigate crimes. He does not save the world. He observes systems that have begun to exceed their creators’ intentions. He identifies what is drifting, what can still be stabilized—and what must sometimes be erased.

Even his name describes a position. Middle. Mid. Mide. The place where layers overlap. For years, Franck maintained a discreet balance between the systems he understood and the world that was not supposed to know about them.

Then, on Saturday, April 5, 2312, he was asked to examine a machine that had been operating continuously for forty-eight hours. Its inventor had been missing for three days.
